Red Blossoms was originally painted in Vancouver. It’s the second in a continuation of a series in which I explore women’s suffrage, changing rolls and particularly women’s empowerment in the 1920s Art Deco period.

This piece manages to be fiery, sultry and powerful. Simple and multi-faceted.

Red Blossoms embodies the political and social changes women went through in the 1920s. Hairstyles alone during that time frame created more controversy than any other period in history. Formerly long locks were sheared off in a 3/4″ bob triggering a hair revolution, symbolizing free-spirited empowerment. By 1921 “Coco” Chanel was notably inspiring women of all ages facing the dilemma to cut or not cut. Women flocked to male dominated barber shops in droves to take place in this major cultural rebellion. Women were no longer willing to return to traditional rolls and shearing their locks was in essence the shedding of Victorian morality and traditional female rolls.

Please note that the price shown doesn’t include mattes, frames, kitty or other items in photo.
